flour made in a blender

6 Best Blenders for Making Flour

Is it really possible to find the best blender for making flour or will we have to search for a grain/flour mill?

When I talked about the best blender for grinding spices, I mentioned that we can use a mortar and pestle, a coffee grinder or buy a spice grinder to make our favorite spices into powder. But I also mentioned that, indeed, we can use a blender for amazing results.

That’s the case here as well.

While we can indeed buy a grain/flour mill if that’s what we want, we can also search for the best blender for making flour. And it will work so well.

Thus, if you want to combine making flour with making refreshing smoothies, making creamy soups, grinding spices, making pureed food, mincing meat or maybe preparing some hummus, salsa and many other things, you can do all that if you buy a powerful, capable blender.

And that’s what we’re going to do right now.

Best Blender for Making Flour Reviews

best blender for making flour

Our search for the best blender for making flour is going to be a very interesting one. However, I’m not sure that it’s going to end up being a cheap endeavor.

In order to break wheat berries, rice, chickpeas, lentils, almonds, etc. and transform them into flours we need power. In the world of blenders, power and efficiency can be quite costly. I’ll still try to maybe discover some more affordable alternatives, we’ll see if I succeed.

1. Nutribullet 600 Personal Blender: Affordable Blender for Making Flour

Since I mentioned that I wanted to also find affordable models to recommend as the best blender for making flour, let’s start with exactly that.

And what better model to recommend than the very affordable Nutribullet Personal Blender?

This is the 600 watts one. The Pro consumes 900 watts so it’s more powerful but I totally prefer the older, 600 watts Nutribullet Personal Blender. It’s absolutely powerful enough, even if we want to buy it as the best blender for making flour.

It also comes with a 24 oz cup and a to-go lid for taking your smoothie with you when you leave the house.

The Nutribullet Personal Blender has only 600 watts but it’s impressively powerful. It’s just what you need if you don’t want to spend more than $60-$70 on getting the best blender on the market.

2. Nutribullet Milling Blade: Cheap Accessory for Making Flour

However, if you want to truly have a complete set, I recommend buying the Nutribullet Milling Blade.

It’s only about $15 but it’s the perfect accessory for the Nutribullet 600.

People love the Nutribullet Milling Blade for grinding grains, coffee, and nuts.

It’s fantastic that such a cheap accessory, like the Milling Blade can transform an affordable Nutribullet Personal Blender into the perfect grain/flour mill, whether you want to make rice flour, whole grain flour, millet flour, chickpea flour, etc.

We can also use it to grind lentils.

It also works for spices, grinding coffee beans and making your own peanut butter.

3. Vitamix E310 Explorian: One of the Best Blenders for Making Flour

If you truly want to buy the best blender for making flour, I recommend checking out Vitamix. This is a famous manufacturer and they have a lot of interesting models.

However, one of my favorites from them is the Vitamix E310 Explorian.

While it’s not a cheap appliance, the E310 is still a lot more affordable than many Vitamix blenders. I think that it’s one of the few who balances price-quality pretty well.

This is a powerful machine that can absolutely be used to make flour and there are plenty of reviews that use this model for that purpose, besides making smoothies and the like.

The Explorian is very easy to use, it’s pretty old-school. There are no smoothie, crushing ice and whatever other buttons like we see with some blenders.

This Vitamix comes with 10 speeds. That’s it. It’s up to you to decide which speed would work best for what you’re making.

When we’re making flour from wheat berries, rice, almonds or other ingredients, we start with the low speed and quickly turn the button until we’ve reached level 10.

In about a minute up to 2 cups of wheat berries are grinded and the whole wheat flour can be sifted and made into delicious foods and desserts.

There’s also a 48 oz container.

And the pulse feature for thick vegetable soups and chunky salsas. You can also use the pulse function to shred chicken.

An on/off button. And that’s about it.

4. Vitamix 5200: One of the Most Powerful Blenders

If somehow you feel that the Vitamix E310 Explorian is too cheap for you and you might be looking for an even better Vitamix model, then we have the Vitamix 5200.

I’ll admit that the Vitamix 5200 is better than the E310 Explorian but it’s also about $200 more expensive. So, there’s that.

Just by design alone, you wouldn’t be able to differentiate the Vitamix 5200 from many other models from this manufacturer.

What makes the 5200 different from the E310 Explorian is the 64 oz container. So, this one has a bigger pitcher.

It also has a feature called variable speed control that is included in the pulse button. It’s meant for us to easily adjust the speed to achieve a variety of textures. Thus, we combine the pulse function with the 10 speeds that the 5200 has.

Otherwise, the blades are the same and the power is the same.

However, there are many users who will absolutely mention that the 5200 is a lot more powerful than the E310 Explorian, especially when it comes to making their own flour.

Moreover, we can somehow make hot soups because the blades in the Vitamix container reach speeds fast enough to create friction heat, bringing cold ingredients to steaming hot in about 6 minutes.

I totally prefer boiling my soup ingredients on the stove and making them creamy in the blender. When I tried making soup in my blender I wasn’t totally impressed with the result, maybe I didn’t do it right.

5. Vitamix Dry Grains Container: Special Blender Accessory for Making Flour

Another reason for recommending two Vitamix blenders as two of the best blenders for making flour is this dry grains container that I wanted to introduce in this article.

Thus, besides having some of the best blenders on the market, this manufacturer has also created an additional container that matches exactly what we’re looking for.

What is the Vitamix Dry Grains Container?

Vitamix blenders come with wet blade containers. That’s how the manufacturer identifies them.

While we can totally use our wet blade containers to make flour from a wide range of grains, nuts, legumes, we can also buy this separate Vitamix Dry Grains Container for blending dry ingredients until they turn into fine powders or flours.

The Vitamix Dry Grains Container has specially designed blades that grind whole grains into fresh flours.

More than that, this special container is also designed to mix batter and to simulate the kneading process to easily prepare dough for baking.

Thus, besides making our own flours, we can also then knead that dough in the same container and then we can quickly move on to the other steps of the recipe we’re making, be it for bread, pizza or desserts.

The blades are designed to create a reverse vortex. This pushes dry ingredients away from the blades to prevent packing.

If you’re totally passionate about making your own flours, grinding spices and other dry ingredients or even kneading the dough in this Vitamix Dry Grains Container, this additional purchase will be wonderful.

Just keep in mind that it’s not compatible with the Vitamix Ascent and Venturist series. Those are the exceptions. But it’s compatible with the 2 Vitamix models that I recommended above.

6. Breville Super Q Blender: Versatile Blender for Making Flour

To give you a small indication of why I absolutely had to recommend this Breville among the best blenders for making flour, I should mention that their recipe book contains a recipe for making a gluten free flour mix.

Thus, not only are we making flour in this blender but we’re also given a recipe for a gluten-free flour mix.

The mix contains: medium grain white rice, brown rice, nonfat milk powder, gluten free cornstarch, organic tapioca flour, organic potato flour and xanthan gum.

I know how expensive gluten-free flours tend to be. It’s really nice to discover that we can make our complex mixes at home.

In their recipe book, we also find recipes for pizza dough, pasta dough, cookie dough, whole wheat bread, cornbread and apple cake.

Well, the Breville Super Q Blender is not a simple blender. It’s a complex machine that requires a bit of time learning and familiarizing ourselves with everything it’s capable of.

Components

Given its 1,800 watts motor, I don’t think it can get more powerful than that for a household countertop blender. It’s awe-inspiring and powerful. Those blades also spin really fast. Breville informs us that it has the highest possible motor rating.

The 68 oz pitcher is big enough and made from extra-durable copolyester.

If you’re a fan of smoothies on the go, you’ll be pleased to learn that this Super Q also includes a 24 oz personal blending cup with a travel lid.

We get 5 programs: green smoothie, smoothies, soup, pulse/ice crush, and frozen dessert.

And 12 speeds. Thanks to these 12 speeds we can create fine milled flour, nut butter, nut & bean milks, fresh cocktails, sauces, freshly ground spices, dressings, dips, etc.

A unique cooling system ensures noise suppression technology.

It also comes with a recipe book, tamper and spatula.

To top it all off, we get a 10 year limited product warranty. For a blender that costs a bit over $500, I would say that the price can be justified, which is the highest praise I can offer it.

How to Use a Blender to Make Flour

If you want to see for yourself just how we can blend whole grain flour, the people from Vitamix made a very short video about how it works.

In that video they’re enticing us with how amazing it would be to bake fresh bread made from freshly ground wheat berries. I would say that it would be even better to make some delicious pizza at home from our flour that was made in a blender.

Thus, besides finding an awesome blender, you’ll have to buy some awesome wheat berries. But we can also make rice flour, chickpea flour and other types of flours so we’re not restricted to only wheat berries.

In order to make the transformation of wheat berries into whole grain flour, we can blend ¼ cup to 2 cups of wheat berries at a time.

I’m pretty satisfied with these quantities. It will only take a few minutes to get all the flour you need, even if you want to use a larger quantity.

In that video from Vitamix, the blender is almost half full.

The blender is first turned on low but, after only a few seconds, the power is turned on high.

In about a minute, you’ll get your flour. You’ll love that smell.

You can use this flour to make bread, pizza, pancakes, cookies, brownies and whatever else you want to bake.

I also recommend sifting the flour, especially if you’re making desserts. It can work just like that, directly from the blender pitcher for bread and pizza but, for other baked goods, I recommend sifting.

All in all, that’s pretty much everything you need to know about the best blender for making flour and how to use it.
